Turkey seeks to expand economic projects in Afghanistan

KABUL: Turkey is looking to increase its economic projects in Afghanistan, according to Turkish Ambassador Sadin Ayyildiz.

During a visit to the western province of Herat, Ayyildiz met with the Herat governor, Maulana Islam Jar, to discuss the expansion of bilateral economic cooperation, the governor’s office said in a statement.

The Turkish envoy emphasized Herat’s strategic economic position and highlighted the importance of joint cooperation in infrastructure, particularly the development of railway networks and regional connectivity.

Ayyildiz also noted that Ankara has provided special facilities for Afghan patients and traders.

For his part, the governor welcomed the expansion of economic ties, pointing to Herat’s strong agricultural potential, especially saffron as well as opportunities in mining and renewable energy.

He encouraged Turkish investors to increase their presence in these sectors.

Trade and transport of goods and minerals between Afghanistan and Turkey are currently carried out via rail links through Herat, underscoring the province’s growing role as a key economic hub.
