Construction work on cold storage, basket-making plant begins in Kabul

KABUL: Construction work has begun on a cold storage facility and a basket-making plant worth $1 million in Kabul, funded by the private sector.

The foundation stone for the project was laid on Wednesday in the Kalakan district of Kabul province, according to a Radio Omid correspondent.

Investor Amir Jan Dawoodzai said the facilities will be built on 11 jeribs of land, with construction expected to be completed within six months.

The cold storage unit will have a capacity of 3,000 tons, aimed at preserving agricultural products and reducing post-harvest losses.

The project is expected to create around 60 direct jobs and 150 indirect employment opportunities, he said adding that the initiative will play a key role in boosting economic growth, improving storage capacity for farm produce, and supporting local agriculture.

Kalakan, located north of Kabul, is known for its vineyards and diverse grape production, making it a strategic location for such infrastructure.
