KABUL: Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, has warned that Iran’s oil production may soon collapse amid mounting pressure from United States sanctions and a naval blockade.
In remarks posted on social media, on Tuesday, Bessent said Iran is facing an impending oil shortage, arguing that the country’s “aging” energy infrastructure is struggling under the impact of restrictions and enforcement measures.
He added that the ongoing maritime blockade by U.S. forces is significantly reducing Iran’s ability to produce and export oil.
The Treasury chief also cautioned foreign governments against continuing cooperation with sanctioned Iranian aviation networks, warning that providing services such as jet fuel, catering, or logistical support could expose them to U.S. sanctions.
Iranian officials have not yet responded to the latest statements.
Reports indicate that since the start of the blockade, nearly 40 vessels traveling to or from Iran have been turned back.
