Protests erupt in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after assassination of a religious scholar

KABUL: Hundreds of supporters of Maulana Mohammad Idris took to the streets in Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following his assassination by armed individuals.
Demonstrators gathered on Tuesday, chanting slogans against those responsible for the attack and expressing anger over the incident.
Videos circulating on social media showed protesters burning tires and blocking the Farooq-e-Azam intersection, disrupting traffic in the area.
Meanwhile, Maulana Ataur Rehman, a senator from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, is expected to hold a press conference later in the day to address the assignation and outline his party’s stance.
Maulana Idris, a prominent religious scholar, teacher at Darul Uloom Haqqania in Akora Khattak, and former member of the provincial assembly, was assassinated earlier Tuesday in an armed attack in Charsadda and two of his guards were also injured.
Funeral prayers for the cleric were scheduled to be held later in the evening.
