Russia and Ukraine agree to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war

KABUL: Delegations from Russia and Ukraine have agreed, with U.S. mediation, to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on X Friday night that Ukraine had received Russia’s agreement to the “1,000 for 1,000” prisoner swap.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine has consistently worked to bring its captured citizens back home and has instructed his team to make the necessary preparations for the exchange as quickly as possible.
He wrote: “One of Ukraine’s key priorities throughout the war has been resolving humanitarian issues, particularly the release of prisoners of war.”
The Ukrainian president also praised the “effective and constructive” diplomatic role played by the United States president and his team in securing Russia’s agreement to the deal, and urged Washington to ensure that Moscow remains committed to the agreement.
Over the more than four years of the devastating war, Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly exchanged prisoners of war and the bodies of fallen soldiers.
