National wheelchair basketball tournament begins in Kabul

KABUL: The General Directorate of Olympics, Physical Education, and Sports has announced the start of a national wheelchair basketball tournament featuring eight of the country’s top teams in Kabul.

According to a statement released on Saturday, the tournament is being held at the indoor sports complex of the directorate and aims to encourage people with disabilities to participate in sports.

The competition brings together 80 wheelchair athletes from the provinces of Herat, Faryab, Balkh, Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Parwan, Laghman, and Kabul.

The wheelchair basketball teams are scheduled to compete over the next three days as part of the tournament.

In the opening match, Kabul’s wheelchair basketball team defeated Faryab with a score of 49–33.

Afghanistan’s sports authorities say efforts to promote sports development and identify athletic talent across different disciplines are continuing nationwide.
