KABUL: Senior Ukrainian officials say Russian forces launched one of the heaviest attacks on Ukraine since the start of the war, firing around 670 drones and 50 missiles overnight.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday in a post on X that Russia launched the drones along with cruise, ballistic, and aeroballistic missiles across various parts of the country overnight Wednesday.
According to Zelensky, the attacks targeted 20 locations in the capital Kyiv, hitting residential buildings, a school, a veterinary clinic, and other civilian infrastructure.
He said part of a nine-story residential building was completely destroyed in the strikes and at least one person was killed, while dozens of others were rescued.
“Since midnight alone, Russia has used more than 1,560 drones against our cities and communities,” Zelensky wrote. “These are certainly not the actions of people who believe the war is ending.”
The large-scale assault came after the expiration of a three-day ceasefire that lasted from May 9 to May 12. Since then, Russia has intensified missile and drone attacks across different parts of Ukraine.
