KABUL: At least three people, including a prominent tribal elder, have lost their lives and four others were injured in a roadside bomb explosion in South Waziristan, northwestern Pakistan, local media reported Monday.
According to Geo News, the blast occurred earlier today in the Rustam Bazaar area of Wana city in South Waziristan, part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, as a result of which three people including Malik Tariq Wazir, a tribal elder and head of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe, lost their lives and four others were injured.
Local police official Mohammad Tahir Shah Wazir said the blast took place while a convoy carrying the tribal leader was passing through the market.
According to the police, the explosive device had been planted overnight in Rustam Bazaar by unidentified individuals.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
Violence and unrest have intensified in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent weeks, leaving dozens of people dead or injured.
