U.S. Senate approves measure to limit Trump’s war powers on Iran

KABUL: The United States Senate has approved a measure aimed at limiting the war powers of Donald Trump in relation to the conflict with Iran, following six previous failed attempts by Democratic lawmakers.

According to NBC News, the resolution passed early Wednesday with 50 votes in favor and 47 against, marking a significant political victory for Democrats.

Under the measure, Trump would now require approval from the United States Congress to continue military operations against Iran.

Republican senators Bill Cassidy, Rand Paul, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins voted in favor of the resolution after opposing similar efforts in the previous six rounds.

Chuck Schumer said Democrats were “breaking the wall of silence” among Republicans regarding what he described as Trump’s “illegal war.”

“For more than 80 days, Trump has dragged America into a costly and chaotic conflict a war without a plan, without a goal, and without legal authority,” Schumer said.

Previous Democratic-led efforts to pass legislation restricting Trump’s authority over military action against Iran had repeatedly failed in the Senate.
