KABUL: Mawlavi Abdolhamid, the most prominent Sunni Muslim cleric in Iran, has said that Iran and the United States should resolve their bilateral disputes through dialogue and establish normal diplomatic relations, rather than linking their national interests to issues involving Israel, Lebanon, and other regional matters.
Speaking during his Friday sermon, Mawlavi Abdolhamid welcomed the ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington, stating that if the two countries normalize their relations, issues related to Palestine, Lebanon, and Israel could also be pursued and resolved more effectively through diplomatic channels.
He emphasized that in any negotiations between Iran and the United States, Iran’s national interests and the improvement of people’s living conditions should remain the top priority.
In another part of his remarks, Mawlavi Abdolhamid described slogans calling for the “death” of other countries as inappropriate, adding that slogans dating back 47 years no longer correspond to today’s political realities.
The Sunni cleric also called for the release of political prisoners, an end to political pressures, and the protection of the rights and freedoms of all ethnic and religious groups in Iran. He urged Iranian authorities to safeguard the rights of all citizens in accordance with Islamic principles, the country’s constitution, and international law.
