Former UK soldier alleges civilian martyrdom and detainee abuse in Afghanistan

KABUL: British media, citing a former UK soldier who served in Afghanistan, have reported allegations that some British troops martyred Afghan civilians and mistreated detainees during their deployment.

According to the report, the former soldier told the Afghanistan Inquiry Commission in confidential testimony that he regrets not speaking out about the incidents sooner.

The testimony alleges that some British soldiers threw Afghan detainees from military transport vehicles “for amusement.”

One witness, Christopher Green, said that British troops martyred three farmer brothers in a village identified as Rahim, without specifying the province, and later paid the family more than £3,600 in compensation.

It should be noted that U.S.-led NATO forces were present in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021. During this period, numerous reports and investigations were published about the martyrdom of civilians in some military operations, as well as allegations of mistreatment and war crimes by a number of forces from NATO member countries, including the United Kingdom, some of which are still under investigation.
