KABUL: Iran has summoned the British ambassador in Tehran in response to the United Kingdom’s decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a threat to its national security.
According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the UK’s move as “hostile” and summoned the ambassador on Wednesday to formally protest the decision.
Reports indicate that under the UK’s new national security legislation, individuals found supporting or assisting the IRGC could face prison sentences of up to 14 years. Those acting on behalf of the group in carrying out sabotage or other hostile activities could face life imprisonment.
The United Kingdom has accused Iran of orchestrating seven attacks against Jewish and Israeli-linked communities on British soil. Tehran has denied the allegations and condemned London’s decision.
