KABUL: Ahmed al-Sharaa, interim president of Syria, has said that Damascus is seeking to sign a joint security agreement with Israel through coordination with several intermediary countries.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, al-Sharaa said Syria does not want a military confrontation with Israel and hopes the proposed agreement will help establish peace and security between the two sides.
He stressed that signing such a security agreement would not affect Syria’s long-standing claim to the Golan Heights.
The Golan Heights have been under Israeli control since the 1967 Six-Day War and remain one of the central issues in the decades-long dispute between Syria and Israel. Damascus has consistently maintained its claim to the territory.
