KABUL: More than 30 people have been killed in clashes between protesters and security forces ahead of the second phase of local elections in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, according to a report by Reuters.
The report said Pakistan’s Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ruling party won nine of the 13 seats contested in the first phase of the elections.
Authorities divided the elections into three phases, instead of holding them on a single day, citing security concerns.
The second and third phases of voting are scheduled to take place on August 2 and August 10, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has boycotted the elections, citing concerns over possible electoral fraud.
