UN Chief warns global temperatures could stay above normal across all continents

KABUL: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has warned, citing forecasts from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), that the strengthening El Niño weather pattern could further intensify the global climate crisis.

Guterres said temperatures across all continents are likely to remain above average through October this year.

El Niño is a climate phenomenon associated with warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean and it influences weather patterns around the world and can contribute to extreme weather events.

The United Nations noted that although Afghanistan contributes very little to global greenhouse gas emissions, it is considered one of the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
