Pakistan army to take over security duties in Rawalpindi

KABUL: Pakistan’s government has approved the deployment of army troops in Rawalpindi to carry out sensitive security duties, according to Pakistani newspaper Dawn.

The decision was made following a request from the Home Department of Punjab and under Article 245 of Pakistan’s Constitution, the army personnel will be deployed in sensitive areas of Rawalpindi for a period of six months.

Under the decision, the army will be responsible for securing key routes and sensitive locations and maintaining readiness to respond rapidly to potential security threats. The move is intended to support civilian authorities in maintaining public order and preventing security crises.

Rawalpindi, located near Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, is one of the country’s most strategically important cities and it is also home to the General Headquarters (GHQ) of the Pakistan Army.

The deployment comes as Rawalpindi continues to be regarded as one of Pakistan’s most sensitive security centers because of its military and political significance.
