KABUL: Richard Bennett, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has described Pakistan’s military airstrikes in Helmand and Kunar provinces as an apparent violation of human rights and international law.
Referring to reports of civilian casualties in the strikes, Bennett said accountability was necessary for the loss of civilian lives.
“Were these the result of incompetence, negligence, or something even more serious?” Bennett asked in comments regarding the attacks.
The UN official stressed that the principles of international human rights and humanitarian law must be respected to protect civilians in Afghanistan.
