Russia and Ukraine agree on temporary ceasefire in Oleshky following Melania Trump’s mediation

KABUL: Russia and Ukraine have reportedly agreed, following mediation by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, to a temporary ceasefire in the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky.

The truce is scheduled to take effect on October 27 and is intended to facilitate the evacuation of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

According to reports, fighting will halt once the ceasefire begins, roads will be cleared of mines, food and medical aid will be delivered, and civilians will be evacuated to safer areas.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also said that representatives from Moscow, Kyiv and Washington are expected to meet in Abu Dhabi during the first half of November to discuss technical arrangements for a potential peace process.

Oleshky, which has been under Russian control since February 2022, previously had a population of around 24,000 and according to reports only between 1,700 and 2,000 elderly residents remain in the town, many of whom urgently need food and medical assistance.
