KABUL: The Afghanistan State-owned Oil and Gas Enterprises says it has begun work to expand the capacity of storage number 2 at the “Kabul Bank” facility in the border town of Hairatan, increasing its capacity to 60,000 tons.
According to a statement from the company’s media office, the current storage capacity of the facility stands at 20,000 tons.
Officials said the Hairatan oil and gas storage had remained inactive for the past 17 years, but rehabilitation and reactivation work is now underway under the supervision of the Hairatan Oil and Gas Directorate and is continuing steadily.
“The railway facilities have also been prepared to enable the transport of wagons to the storage site,” said the statement.
The state-owned company said the reactivation of the facility will play an important role in strengthening the energy sector, increasing storage capacity, and ensuring supply during emergencies.
It also noted that new oil and gas storage facilities have been established in the “Roznak” port in western Afghanistan.
