Ministry of Public Health urges WHO to support Afghanistan in addressing thalassemia

KABUL: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, which falls on May 8th, urged the World Health Organization (WHO) to support Afghanistan in eradicating this disease in the country.

A ceremony was held, on the occasion of Thalassemia Day, which coincides with today May 9th (Wednesday, 19 Saur), here in Kabul.

According to the officials of the Ministry of Public Health, currently, there are 4,300 individuals suffering from thalassemia across the country who are undergoing treatment.

The ministry has appealed for assistance from international foundations and organizations in this regard.

Thalassemia is an inherited genetic disorder that is passed from parents to children. Individuals with this disease have a severe reduction in red blood cells, leading to anemia, bone deformities, and cardiac complications.
