KABUL: Following deadly clashes in the past two days between Pakistani military forces and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. envoy for Afghan peace, stated that ongoing tensions do not have a military solution.
Khalilzad made the remarks on Sunday night, on his X account emphasizing that it is time for Islamabad to adopt a political approach toward the TTP, and that Kabul should assist Pakistan in this effort.
According to Khalilzad, if Pakistan believes that confronting the TTP can be resolved through military means, it is “deeply mistaken.” He asserted that the Pakistani government has no credible military strategy for dealing with the TTP.
He noted that the Pakistani ruling establishment had previously advised the United States and the Afghan government to engage in negotiations with the Afghan Taliban to reach a political solution. Now, he argues, it is time for Pakistan to do the same.
This comes amidst Khalilzad’s previous criticisms of Pakistan’s policies and internal issues, where he has advised the country to resolve its own matters rather than focusing on external criticisms.
