UN Security Council meeting: Russia and China fail to prevent resumption of sanctions on Iran

KABUL: A resolution proposed by Russia and China in the UN Security Council to delay the reinstatement of sanctions against Iran was not approved.
Reuters reported on Friday that the efforts of these two countries were unsuccessful.
Following the rejection of the resolution, all UN sanctions under the “snapback” mechanism are set to be reimposed on Iran today.
The proposal from Russia and China, as two permanent members of the Security Council, received only four votes among the 15 members. The Iranian government previously warned that the West would be responsible for any consequences arising from the reinstatement of sanctions.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated in discussions with reporters that the country has no intention of withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
Earlier, a resolution by three European countries—France, the UK, and Germany—regarding the suspension of UN sanctions against Iran was also rejected by the Security Council.
