Guterres welcomes agreement between Hamas and Israel for ceasefire in Gaza

KABUL: Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, announced that he welcomes and supports the agreement for a ceasefire and the release of Israeli prisoners in Gaza, based on the U.S. President’s peace plan.

In a post on his X account this morning, he praised the roles and efforts of the U.S., Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey in mediating this “vital progress.”

Guterres stated, “I urge all parties involved to fully adhere to the terms of this agreement.”

He added that the United Nations will support the full implementation of the agreement between Hamas and the Israeli regime and will intensify efforts to deliver “sustainable and principled” humanitarian aid.

He emphasized that the UN will continue to advance the reconstruction and improvement of conditions in Gaza.

The UN chief also called on all stakeholders to seize this historic opportunity to establish a credible political path toward ending the occupation, recognizing the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people, and achieving a two-state solution.

Guterres expressed that the situation has never been as “sensitive and decisive” as it is now.

This announcement follows the U.S. President’s announcement earlier today about the approval and signing of the first phase of the peace plan in Gaza by Hamas and Israel.
