KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that he has authorized the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to conduct covert operations in Venezuela.
According to multiple American officials cited by The New York Times, the Trump administration is attempting to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power.
Reuters reported that the U.S. government refers to these efforts as measures to combat drug trafficking, claiming that attempts to transport narcotics from Venezuela to the U.S. are ongoing.
On the other hand, Nicolás Maduro, the President of Venezuela, has rejected Washington’s stance, stating that the U.S. is trying to occupy Venezuelan territory under the pretext of “narcotics,” similar to the previous justifications used for the Iraq War, with the intention of seizing the country’s oil reserves.
