KABUL: A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has struck not only the city of Balıkesir but also Izmir, Bursa, Istanbul, Tekirdağ, Kocaeli, and Sakarya, as well as the Marmara and Aegean regions of the country.
Anadolu News Agency reported that the earthquake occurred at 10:48 PM local time on Monday.
Ali Yerlikaya, the Turkish Minister of Interior, stated that in this natural disaster, three non-residential buildings and a two-story shop were completely destroyed, but no casualties have been reported from the affected areas so far.
Mr. Yerlikaya noted that the buildings that collapsed had already been damaged in a previous earthquake and were currently unoccupied.
The Minister emphasized that two individuals were injured due to panic caused by the earthquake while jumping from a building.
He also reported power outages in some earthquake-stricken areas but added that work teams are already deployed to restore electricity.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Turkey (AFAD), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 5.99 kilometers.
The epicenter of the earthquake has been identified as the “Sındırgı” district in Balıkesir Province.
