Trump meets Japan’s first female leader, signs “vital” trade and mineral agreements

KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump has traveled to Japan as part of his Asian tour, where he met with the new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, in Tokyo.

Reuters reported early today, that the U.S. President and the Japanese Prime Minister signed “vital” trade and mineral agreements, and Ms. Takaichi is set to present an investment package worth $550 billion to Trump.

This investment package includes sectors such as shipbuilding, soybean purchases, natural gas, and American pickup trucks.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister promised to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, while the U.S. President praised Ms. Takaichi, calling her one of the greatest Prime Ministers.

Trump remarked, “This is a very strong handshake. From what I’ve heard from Shinzo and others, you will be one of the greatest Prime Ministers. I also want to congratulate you on being Japan’s first female Prime Minister; that’s an important matter.”

The Japanese leader also gifted Trump a golf club from former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a golf bag signed by Japanese golf champion Hideki Matsuyama, and a gold-plated golf ball.

It is noteworthy that last week, during her selection as Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi pledged to increase Japan’s defense spending to 2% of the country’s GDP.

Analysts believe this may influence the White House to reconsider pressuring Tokyo to boost its defense budget to protect the islands against China.
