Deadly police operation in Brazil; 64 killed including 4 police officers

KABUL: At least 64 people, including four police officers, have been killed in a bloody police operation in Brazil.

Reuters reported on Tuesday night, that the operation was launched in Rio de Janeiro against one of the major “criminal” gangs.

Claudio Castro, the Governor of Rio de Janeiro, stated that the operation was conducted in the impoverished areas of “Alemanha” and “Penha,” near the city’s airport, where 2,500 Brazilian police forces participated in the operation.

The operation was initiated just days before the global climate change conference (COP30).

The event, referred to as C40, will see participation from mayors around the world.

It is common in Brazil, especially in Rio de Janeiro, for similar operations to be conducted against criminal groups before such significant international meetings.

However, this operation has been described as unprecedented and extremely bloody, with casualty figures reported to be double those of previous operations conducted in the city.
