KABUL: Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, has stated that during his recent trip to China, he warned Beijing that if it does not address the trade deficit with the European Union, it will face increased tariffs, Reuters reported.
In an interview with a French newspaper, on Sunday, the French President mentioned that during his visit to Beijing last week, he informed Chinese officials that their trade surplus is unsustainable and that reducing imports from Europe has caused China to lose its customers.
This approach could push them towards retaliatory actions.
He stated, “I told them that if they do not react, we Europeans will be forced to take decisive actions in the coming months, similar to those of the United States, including imposing tariffs on Chinese products.”
According to the French President, the EU industry is in a difficult situation due to being caught between the U.S. and China.
This warning comes amid reports indicating that the trade deficit between Europe and China has surged by 60% over the past six years (from 2019 to now).
