UK resumes talks to join the EU defense fund SAFE

KABUL: Amid growing doubts about the U.S. commitment to European security, the UK government has decided to resume discussions regarding access to the European Union’s defense fund known as “SAFE.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer in an interview with The Guardian published on Sunday night, said that the “Security Action for Europe (SAFE)” fund is a European initiative aimed at strengthening the EU’s defense capabilities, with a value of €150 billion (approximately $177 billion). Discussions on this fund had previously stalled in November of last year (2025).

Starmer stated, “We need to strive for more. It’s not just President Trump who believes Europe needs to do more—other presidents share this view. I think so too. That’s why we are committed to increasing our spending, but I believe we need to go beyond that.”

According to published reports, Maros Sefcovic, the European Union’s Trade Commissioner, along with other EU officials, is expected to visit London this week for talks.

Concerns within the European Union regarding threats from Russia have heightened following remarks by Donald Trump during his second presidential term, which raised worries among his European allies about his commitments to the alliance.
