KABUL: Amid rising tensions between Washington and Iran, international media have reported that hundreds of U.S. troops have been evacuated from bases in Qatar and Bahrain.
The New York Times reported late Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter at the United States Department of Defense, that American personnel had left Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.
The evacuation, the number of troops involved has not been disclosed, and is being described as a precautionary measure amid growing speculation over a potential U.S. strike on Iran.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has not commented on requests for clarification regarding the reported withdrawals.
The developments come as thousands of U.S. troops remain stationed across the region, including in Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, underscoring the scale of the U.S. military footprint in the Middle East.
