Putin and Iran’s President discuss war, stress continued coordination

KABUL: As the conflict between Iran and the United States and Israel enters its second week, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, held a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian.

The official website of the Russian presidency and Iranian media reported on Friday night that, during the call, Putin stressed the need to stop the war, reject the use of force to resolve the Iran issue, and return to diplomacy as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Pezeshkian said that Tehran expects Moscow to use its international capacities to support the Iranian people’s right to defend themselves against what he described as “aggression.”

Pezeshkian also said: “In our previous call, you mentioned that according to Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim, they had no intention of attacking Iran. But today it has become clear to everyone that deceit and malice are part of their nature, and while claiming negotiations, they attacked us again.”

At the end of the call, the two presidents emphasized continuing coordination between Moscow and Tehran through various diplomatic channels.

The conversation is said to be the first direct contact between the leaders of Iran and Russia since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran about a week ago.
