KABUL: At least six people were killed, 14 injured, and four hostages rescued after a deadly armed hostage-taking incident in Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the figures late Saturday, adding that police forces killed the attacker.
According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the incident occurred in the Holosiivskyi District after a gunman opened fire on civilians in the street before entering a supermarket and taking several people hostage.
Zelenskyy said four people were killed during the initial shooting, one inside the store, and another victim later died in the hospital from severe injuries. He warned the death toll could rise as more victims seek medical treatment.
Authorities said the suspect was born in Russia, had lived in the Donetsk region, and had a prior criminal record.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and police have launched a full investigation.
The incident comes as Ukraine continues to face ongoing conflict and security challenges amid the prolonged war with Russia.
