Japan on high alert after North Korea launches ballistic missiles

KABUL: Japan has placed its armed forces on full alert following ballistic missile launches by North Korea, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Sunday on X early morning.
Takaichi said an emergency response team meeting was held at the crisis management center in the prime minister’s office, with Tokyo closely coordinating and sharing intelligence with South Korea and the United States.
According to South Korea’s military, the missiles were launched from the eastern coastal city of Sinpo in North Korea. An emergency meeting was also held in Seoul following the launches.
Japanese officials said the missiles fell outside the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), but authorities have ordered all relevant agencies to intensify data collection and analysis, ensure public safety, and maintain readiness for any contingency.
North Korea’s continued missile testing aimed at strengthening its military capabilities has heightened regional tensions, particularly in Japan and South Korea.
The latest launch marks North Korea’s seventh missile test in 2026 and its fourth in April alone.
