Afghanistan drills 12 new oil wells in Amu Darya Basin

KABUL: The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum says 12 new oil wells have been drilled in the “Zamrudsay” area of the Amu Darya Basin in the country’s north.
Spokesperson of the ministry Homayoun Afghan said that trial extraction has already begun from five of the wells, while work continues on safety systems for the remaining sites.
He added that once safety installations are completed, extraction will begin from the other seven wells.
According to officials, the current production capacity from the five active wells stands at around 500 tons and is expected to increase further once all 12 wells become operational.
The initial extraction phase was officially launched by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, during a recent visit to the area.
