Trump signals possible cut to U.S. forces stationed in Germany

KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he is reviewing a potential reduction of American troops stationed in Germany, amid growing disagreements between Washington and Berlin.
Trump made the remarks early Thursday on his social media platform Truth Social, saying a final decision on the matter would be announced soon.
The development comes as tensions have escalated between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in recent weeks, particularly over the war involving Iran and what Washington sees as insufficient support from NATO allies.
In the latest exchange, Merz accused Iran of humiliating the United States in negotiations aimed at ending the conflict. Trump responded by saying the German leader “does not know what he is talking about.”
According to data from the U.S. Department of Defense, more than half of the approximately 68,000 American troops stationed in Europe, around 36,400 personnel are currently based in Germany.
It remains unclear whether the potential troop reduction is directly linked to political disagreements between the two countries or part of a broader strategic shift by Washington.
