KABUL: Hundreds of residents in Nanyuki have staged protests against a U.S.-backed plan to build an Ebola quarantine facility at a military base in Laikipia.
According to reports, demonstrators argued that the project could pose a public health risk and called on the government to halt the initiative entirely.
The protests come days after the High Court of Kenya temporarily suspended implementation of the plan following the filing of a legal challenge. The court expressed concerns that the project could potentially endanger public health.
Reports indicate that the proposed 50-bed facility was intended to house U.S. citizens who may have been exposed to the Ebola virus but had not yet developed symptoms.
The Kenyan government, however, has defended the project, saying it is designed to strengthen preparedness for public health emergencies.
Local residents have vowed to continue their demonstrations over fears of a possible disease outbreak, while the court has yet to issue a final ruling on the controversial project.
