Former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passes away at 74

KABUL: Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar, has died at the age of 74.

The Qatari Royal Court announced in a statement that Sheikh Hamad passed away on Sunday but did not provide further details regarding the cause of his death.

Sheikh Hamad was regarded as one of Qatar’s most influential leaders, overseeing major political, economic, and development reforms during his time in office.

He served as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before voluntarily stepping down in favor of his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who has led the country since then.
