KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump says Washington is engaged in negotiations with Tehran and prefers reaching a diplomatic agreement rather than resorting to military action.
According to a report by Al Jazeera published on Thursday, Trump made the remarks during an event in the U.S. state of Nevada.
Trump claimed that before Iranian officials sought negotiations, the United States had been preparing for what he described as “the largest attack since World War II.”
“We were fully prepared for the biggest attack since World War II, and they (the Iranians) called me and said, ‘Please don’t do it. Let’s talk,’” Trump said.
Despite expressing a preference for diplomacy, Trump reiterated his longstanding position that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. He emphasized that while the United States favors a negotiated settlement, preventing Iran from developing a nuclear capability remains a key objective.
