KABUL: At a meeting chaired by Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan’s Interior Minister, and attended by government officials and private-sector representatives, a decision was made to reopen the previously closed trade and transit routes between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
According to reports, the meeting also discussed facilitating the movement of passengers between the two countries and establishing a legal and organized system for cross-border travel.
Despite the decision, Pakistani authorities have not yet announced a specific date for the actual reopening of the routes.
Meanwhile, traders and protesters in Landi Kotal have warned that if practical steps are not taken to reopen the trade and transit routes to Afghanistan, they will stage a sit-in at Torkham and travel to Islamabad to protest.
Afghan authorities have so far not commented on the Pakistani officials’ statements.
