KABUL: Spain has announced that, starting today, it will impose border controls on flights and ferries arriving from Italy, with the measures set to remain in place until September 7.
The Spanish government said the decision was made in response to recent measures taken by Italy amid growing migration pressures.
Under the new measures, passengers arriving in Spain from Italy will undergo checks of their passports, nationality and visa documents.
Italy had previously introduced temporary border restrictions affecting travel with Spain under the Schengen free-movement system. Rome linked the measure to a large wave of migration toward Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta on July 30.
The dispute between the two countries comes as the migration crisis in Ceuta has once again revived debate over the reintroduction of border controls within Europe’s Schengen area.
