KABUL: Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has pledged during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow that Syria will honor all previous agreements and contracts signed with Russia.
During talks at the Kremlin, al-Sharaa said Damascus would continue implementing its previous agreements with Moscow. The commitment could ease Russia’s concerns about the future of its two major military bases in Syria.
According to reports, Syria’s Foreign Ministry said Damascus and Moscow had reached an understanding to transform the Russian military bases into joint training centers.
This is al-Sharaa’s first visit to Russia since coming to power.
Last year, he overthrew the government of Bashar al-Assad, who maintained close relations with Moscow.
