KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump says Russia has released 32-year-old former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman from prison on humanitarian grounds and that he is now on his way to the United States.
Gilman was arrested in Russia in 2022 on charges of assaulting a police officer and subsequently spent several years in prison.
His family said his health had seriously deteriorated due to mistreatment while in prison.
Trump said talks were held with Russian President Vladimir Putin to secure Gilman’s release and that no prisoner exchange was involved.
U.S. officials said Gilman will receive medical care in the United States.
