KABUL: The United States on Thursday announced new sanctions targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon, accusing the Iran-backed group of acting in support of the Iranian government and maintaining ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
In a statement, the U.S. Treasury Department said the group has been designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) for providing services to the Iranian government and following the directives of the IRGC’s Quds Force.
A U.S. official said the designation was intended to underscore Washington’s view that Hezbollah operates on behalf of the Iranian government.
The United States also sanctioned 10 individuals, accusing them of illegally transferring cash to Hezbollah.
Hezbollah has been designated by the United States as a Foreign Terrorist Organization since 1997 and as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist since 2001.
