KABUL: Mohammad Reza Aref, Iran’s First Vice President, says Tehran has full control over the Strait of Hormuz and considers this control a legal right over its national resources.
Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday, August 25, that Aref said the Strait of Hormuz “belongs to Iran” and that Tehran is fully prepared to respond to any threat against the country.
Iran’s first vice president added that Iran is prepared to confront its “enemies” and warned that any party taking a hostile approach toward Iran would regret its actions.
The remarks come as the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important routes for the transportation of oil and gas and any disruption to maritime traffic through the waterway could have significant consequences for global energy markets.
Iran has repeatedly emphasized its role and sovereignty in the region and has, on various occasions, issued warnings regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz and the movement of vessels through the waterway.
