KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have announced a new round of sweeping economic pressure on Iran under an operation referred to as “Economic D-Day.”
The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed new sanctions on around 60 Iran-linked individuals, companies and vessels and warned countries and businesses maintaining financial and trade ties with Tehran.
Washington has threatened that foreign entities could face restrictions within the U.S. financial system if they continue doing business with Iran.
Bessent said the United States aims to cut off the financial and commercial channels that have allowed Iran’s economy to remain operational.
According to Bessent, Iran’s oil exports, financial networks, shipping activities and other economic ties will be among the main targets of the new pressure campaign.
The measures come as the conflict between the United States and Iran continues, months after the outbreak of hostilities, with Washington yet to achieve what it considers a decisive outcome.
