KABUL: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says significant progress has been made in talks between Tehran and Muscat on establishing a temporary route for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Reuters, Araghchi made the remarks during a phone conversation with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, during which he briefed his counterpart on the latest developments in the Iran-Oman negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian foreign minister said the return of the Strait of Hormuz to normal operations depends on the implementation of U.S. commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Iranian officials have previously said that talks with Oman on establishing a temporary maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz are progressing and that technical discussions between the two countries are continuing.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s major energy transit routes, and developments affecting shipping through the waterway have raised concerns regionally and internationally.
