Houthis seize Mayyun Island, expand control around Bab al-Mandab

KABUL: Yemen’s Houthi movement has seized the strategic island of Mayyun, also known as Perim Island, Al Jazeera reported.

According to the report, the Houthis strengthened their control over areas surrounding the Bab al-Mandab Strait after taking control of the island.

Following the takeover, the Houthis also seized military equipment worth millions of dollars that had been manufactured by the United States, the report said.

Mayyun Island is located in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, giving it significant strategic importance because of its position along the vital maritime route.

The Bab al-Mandab Strait is one of the world’s key routes for international trade and maritime transportation, connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean.
