Maduro and wife could face new criminal charges in U.S.

WASHINGTON: Venezuela’s ousted President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, could face new criminal charges in the United States over the alleged torture of U.S. citizens detained in Venezuela, a U.S. official told Reuters on Wednesday.

Maduro and Flores were detained by U.S. forces on Jan. 3 at their home in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, and were later transferred to New York as part of an investigation into allegations related to drug trafficking.

According to the report, potential new torture-related charges by U.S. authorities would broaden the case against Maduro and expose him to additional serious criminal allegations beyond the drug-trafficking charges.
