KABUL: Russian state media reports that the country is prepared to extract oil from Afghanistan by drilling wells.
The RIA Novosti news agency cited Rustam Khaibulin, head of the Russian Trade Center in Afghanistan, that Russia plans to establish an oil refinery within Afghanistan.
He noted that the Russian “Intco” company has conducted the necessary geological explorations in Afghanistan.
He emphasized that oil extraction work will soon begin following these explorations.
The statements from Russian officials come two days after the signing of five cooperation agreements between Afghan and Russian officials in Kazan.
The agreements were signed in the presence of a high-level Islamic Emirate delegation led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, and the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia.
