KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump announced that after threatening to impose a 50% tariff on imports from European countries, EU officials are now prepared for rapid discussions regarding the matter.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Tuesday evening, he stated, “I have just been informed that the European Union has reached out to immediately set up meeting dates. This is a positive development, and I hope they will finally open the doors of European countries to trade with America, as I requested from China.”
He emphasized that EU leaders were moving very slowly in trade discussions with Washington, but the tariff warning has prompted them to take action.
Previously, Trump had warned that starting June 1, he would raise tariffs on EU imports by 50%, but he later postponed this deadline to July 9.
As of now, officials from the European Commission have not commented on the situation.
